January: Mary, by Kate Duggan.  Click here to view her piece.

This piece is a part of a series of seven, which came from a Space Research assignment. The assignment was to combine 3-D reality with digital editing. I photographed Elizabeth Dunford with some fabric and edited the images in Illustrator to a basic color scheme or red, white, and black. The graphic style is a simplification of patterns in Byzantine religious art. The simple colors and patterns are supposed to show how women are simplified to specific roles.  The concept is about the boxes women are often placed in. Most women are labeled as a virgin, “whore”, or mother. I thought Mary was an interesting figure because she represents the virgin and the mother. She is exempt from the labels that come with sex. It is deemed acceptable for women to fall into one of Mary’s two roles, but they are often condemned for having sex, which necessary to transition between the two.

February: Chalk, by Kathlynn Lewis.  Click here to view her piece.

This Photograph was taken as part of a day long exploration of interesting art and architecture in downtown Charlottesville.  The photograph is of a menu for a hole in the wall crepe shop just off the downtown mall.    I really enjoy photographing the unique details of life and the chalk drawings  just caught my eye while I was stopping for food there.

April: Truth, by Steven Fraser.  Click here to view his piece.

I am a multimedia artist and writer who likes to experiment with different media including illustration, sequential art and poetry. “Truth” is a Comic Book Poem and an investigation into comic book storytelling and the possibilities of visual poetry. The illustration was created using marker pens on watercolour paper. I added thread and a needle to the page to give a level of authenticity and to further express the themes of the words written on the page. The content of “Truth” looks at the frustrated ways in which someone can exploit different methods to express themselves. The comic is short, succinct and to the point.

September: Moss Piglets, by Ryan Schultz.  Click here to view his piece.

Moss Piglets” is an exploration into the mere concept of waterbears. Like my related painting “Space potatoes reproduce by Bonding,” I chose to start small and work my way out slowly, creating a small world over the course of two weeks that began as a study in infection and finally resulted in a complete takeover of corporate america by a moon colony of waterbears. The waterbears cannot be stopped.
